On May 20th, the SEK-El Castillo Astronomy Club was officially launched, bringing together families and students interested in exploring and deepening their understanding of the fascinating world of Astronomy.
During this first session, participants attended an engaging informative talk covering key astronomical topics. Special attention was given to solar eclipses, including the upcoming eclipse that will be visible in Spain on August 12th, the regions where it can be observed, and, importantly, the necessary safety precautions to protect eyesight during observation.
The session also included a comprehensive overview of the life cycle of stars: how they form, their main characteristics, the different stages of their evolution, and how they eventually die.
In addition, participants were introduced to the basic operation of a telescope, the use of a night sky observation map, and how to navigate the Stellarium app, an essential tool for locating celestial objects.
At the same time, younger students took part in an introductory telescope-handling session, where they learned how to use the equipment in a practical way. Using our mascot KosKillas as a reference point, they practiced locating and focusing objects, which helped them develop the skills needed to successfully observe the Moon later in the evening.
In a warm and welcoming atmosphere, families shared a light snack together, creating a valuable opportunity for connection while waiting for nightfall. Once darkness set in, participants enjoyed an exciting observation session, viewing the Moon, Venus, and Jupiter, as well as the Gemini constellation and the star Arcturus.
It is also worth highlighting the involvement of 1st and 2nd year Baccalaureate students, who acted as monitors as part of their CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service) activities, supporting and guiding the younger participants throughout the event.
